ALS, 1782 Feb. 20, Philadelphia, to Robert Morris.

In 1781 Paine had accompanied John Laurens to France to obtain financial aid and provisions. His mission was successful, but he received no compensation for the trip beyond expenses, and those he frequently paid for himself. Now, finding himself in financial difficulties, he asks Morris, the Superintendent of Finance, for an allowance.
